Why Is Your AC Not Cooling in Mumbai Humidity? Gas Leak vs Coil Issue

By Master HVAC Team • Sonyservice center Mumbai

During peak Mumbai months from March through October, temperatures frequently surpass 36°C paired with relative humidity exceeding 85%. In these extreme conditions, an air conditioner is an indispensable life line. Yet thousands of households in Bandra, Santacruz, Juhu, and Andheri find their AC running constantly while blowing tepid, room-temperature air.

Here is what is happening inside your cooling system and how to diagnose whether you are dealing with a choked air filter, a saline gas leak, or a compressor failure.

1. The "Mumbai Coastal Rust" Phenomenon: Copper Pinhole Leaks

Mumbai's coastal air is dense with sodium chloride (salt ions) carried by Arabian Sea winds. In coastal suburbs like Carter Road (Bandra), Juhu Tara Road, and Versova, this sea salt attacks the condenser's copper U-bends and aluminum fins.

This electrochemical corrosion creates microscopic pinhole punctures. The high-pressure refrigerant gas (R32 or R410A) slowly bleeds out over 2 to 4 weeks. Once gas pressure drops below 110 PSI, the indoor cooling coil starves, preventing dehumidification and cooling.

How to Spot a Gas Leak Yourself: Look at the thin copper pipe connecting the outdoor unit to the indoor unit. If you see white frost or ice crystals coating the brass nut or pipe, your refrigerant gas is severely low due to a leak!

2. Heavy Black Slime & Mold Choking the Evaporator Coil

Because Mumbai air is constantly humid, the indoor evaporator coil remains wet with condensed moisture throughout the day. Dust, kitchen oil vapors, and pet dander adhere to this damp surface, forming a thick black, gelatinous bio-slime layer.

This slime insulates the cooling fins—preventing the refrigerant from absorbing heat from the room—and chokes the blower fan wheel. Simply washing the nylon plastic mesh filters in the sink is not enough; the coil requires a deep high-pressure jet pump wash with antibacterial foaming cleanser to penetrate deep inside the aluminum fins.

3. Outdoor Compressor Thermal Trip (Heat Island Effect)

In Mumbai high-rise apartments, outdoor AC units are frequently placed inside tight duct shafts or recessed window ledges. When outdoor temperatures soar and condenser coils are coated in street grime, the compressor cannot dissipate heat. Its internal temperature exceeds 115°C, causing the internal bi-metallic thermal overload protector (TOP) to trip. The indoor fan continues to blow air, but the compressor shuts down.

The Sonyservice center 4-Step Cooling Restoration

  1. High-Pressure Nitrogen Leak Testing: We pressurize the refrigerant circuit with dry nitrogen up to 350 PSI to locate every pinhole leak.
  2. Silver Alloy Brazing & Anti-Corrosive Coating: Pinhole leaks are permanently sealed with 15% silver alloy brazing rods, followed by a protective hydrophobic anti-rust coating.
  3. Deep Vacuuming to 500 Microns: Moisture inside an AC system turns into hydrochloric acid under heat. We use commercial two-stage vacuum pumps to eliminate all moisture and non-condensable gases.
  4. Weight-Measured Gas Charging: We recharge virgin R32 or R410A refrigerant strictly using electronic digital scales matching the manufacturer's exact gram specifications.
